Gerald's Jive

Now there are two human children in our house, I finally understand how people say they just never get the time to stay in touch. With the two little ones, Gilbert and Hugh, for Mummy and I to look after my days just fly by.

So how do I spend my days now? The mornings start early (again the two little humans to blame) and I try and stay really still and quiet and hope they don’t notice me so I can stay in my bed for as long as possible. As I sleep just outside their bedrooms this doesn’t normally work and I usually wake to one of the boys lying on top of me for a cuddle. I humpf and go on a bit, but I do love it! The rest of the mornings are usually taken up with some craft time or toy time. Play-doh, paints and glue smell so good, but Mummy tells me I am not to eat them. Toy time for me is really just a game of dodgeball. Mummy always tells me how patient I am when I am lying on my mat completely surrounded by cars, balls, and plastic animals, or when I get shoved off my mat because Hugh wants to practice his standing and needs to hang on to the edge of my mat. Our relationship is one of give and take though - thanks to Gilbert and Hugh I now get a bit of a snack in the middle of the day (historically I have only ever been a two meal a day hound). Gilbert drops snacks for me deliberately and baby Hugh doesn’t mean to but I accept his offerings as well. After lunch all the boys in the house get to nap - furry and human ones!

Sport is how we fill our afternoon. We all love playing with balls and tend to all scurry for them at once. When the boys tire of the game they love to make me hop like a kangaroo by holding up my front paws. Very undignified but my kangaroo impression is really quite good now.

The evenings are my favourite though. Ever since Gilbert was born I have enjoyed the pleasure of a book before bed every night. Gilbert or Mummy chose the book; of course I always have my paws crossed for Hairy Maclary!
