Gerald's Jive - Second Edition

Glory to Dr Jacques Edwin Brandenburger!

There are many things in my day that bring me great joy; waking up in the morning and watching my parents get ready for work whilst I stay in my warm bed, wrapped in my blankets knowing that breakfast is just minutes away; going for a walk with my Mummy, and sniffing at everything around me; lying on my mat and eating my Greenies; playing with my friends at my grandparents farm whilst getting filthy dirty; having cuddles on the lounge; lying across my Daddy's lap while he works at his computer; being scratched behind my ears and on the left side of my neck; sitting under the chairs in Small Friends' reception watching over the footpath, etc etc. But nothing can turn my head, stop me in my tracks, garner all my attention, and fill my heart with anticipation quite like the crinkle of plastic.

Whether it be a bag of pasta being ripped open for my parents dinner, the new mop being removed from its plastic wrapping, or a brand new bag of liver treats - I am there. Yes, sometimes I am disappointed and that crinkling of plastic is not summoning me. But it is always worth a look, just in case it is my liver treats, Greenies, or Happy Yappers that are having their first exposure to fresh air since being packaged just for me.

I am sure that if these delights were just pulled from a cardboard box, or slipped off a plate they would not taste as good. It is that crinkle that heralds their arrival, like trumpets announcing the Queen herself, which add to the occasion of eating these treats. For this experience I must thank Dr Jacques Edwin Brandenburger, the inventor of cellophane. Hip Hoorah, Hip Hoorah, Hip Hoorah.

So the next time that delightful crinkle makes your heart skip a beat, before being handed a delicious treat, just spare a thought for Dr Brandenburger - that clever man, and obvious lover of small friends.

Until next time,

Gerald
