About Dr Melissa
and her small friends Stinky, Snowpea and Heifer

Dr HaoI have loved animals since I was young. I grew up with five older sisters and I was always the one that brought home stray or injured animals. That was how I got my black cat Stinky. I found her as a stray kitten in 1999 and she has stayed with me since. Stinky is very food orientated, so I have managed to train her to sit, shake hands and beg on command!

I also have two female guinea pigs that I have rescued. Snowpea was about 3 weeks old when she came to me after being found in someone’s backyard. She is agouti and white, has a smooth coat and a mohawk along her back. Heifer is tri-colour (red, black and white) and an Abyssinian breed (i.e. she has crazy hair). Heifer was rescued as an adult from the RSPCA and got her name as she loves to graze on grass (just like cows). My guinea pig’s favourite foods are Chinese greens, dandelion and milk thistle.

I love being a veterinarian as every day is different and you never know what is going to turn up at work. I have a particular interest in exotic animals (that is Guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, mice, rats and reptiles) and also in small animal soft tissue surgery.

After graduating from the University of Sydney in 2009, I worked at a very busy practice, Macarthur Veterinary Group in Sydney. In the 12 months I was there I learnt a lot about all aspects of veterinary medicine and surgery. I saw all sorts of animals as well as the less conventional bearded dragon, birds, rabbits and a goat.  I love working at Small Friends as I love making sure that your furry family members are happy and healthy.

When I am not working as a vet my other interests include beekeeping, dairy cattle showing, touch football and bushwalking.
